Beans & Brandy

Most likely, the movies with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill do not count among mankind’s greatest cultural achievements. I don’t care. I’m not a cineaste. It’s not the movies themselves anyway why I love Bud and Terence. Rather it’s my notion that the characters played by this duo are the exact antithesis to our modern world with its self-optimisers, technocrats, wannabe warriors, and all the other conformist bores with too little wits and heart.

Bambino & Trinity and Sheriff Hall and Nobody and the others are nothing of this and nothing of those super-cool modern movie protagonists I’m so fed up with. They are not tattooed and do not wear martial hairstyles. They are not sadistic brutes. They are not model athletes. They do not indulge in pathos and mawkishness. No.

They are loud, they are lazy to the max, they are individualist, and wayward. They are imperfect (too fat, too skinny, too dirty). They love eating and drinking (and eating again). They are irreligious. They are civilians. They blunder. They like a good laugh. They are simple and straightforward. And they have big hearts and always side with the weak. – Enough to enjoy a bad antiquated movie now and then, eh?
