In an earlier article, »Ease«, I mused about how it can be a really good thing for an artist to just dump an idea, an attempt, even a finished work. Like I did when I was working on the recent »Songs in Ink« post.
I had a finalised ink drawing, derived from the big sketch you can see here. It was okay. I’d even already scanned it and was about to start applying the grey shades. But I was not happy. My gut said: »Boy, this is your hobby, not your job. There’s no budget to stick to, no deadline to meet. Don’t do stuff here that’s okay. Do stuff that you love!«
The important detail is: I did not start all over again because of some technical issue (you know, messed up anatomy or skewed perspective or some such stuff). It’s not about perfection. It’s all about ease and being in the flow and enjoying what you do.
