I’ve just devoured Émile Zola’s »Germinal« in a fit of binge-reading and could not resist the temptation to give a painted reflection – however faint – of the deep impression Zola has left on me. Nor can I refrain from a little jibe at the simplistic world view of too many fellows today who readily subsume the Maheus under the label of priviledged imperialist and colonialist Europeans. – L’histoire, c’est bête comme chou, hein?
